Padang Padang Beach: the complete guide (and where to eat after)

Padang Padang is the beach everyone pictures when they think of Uluwatu: a small cove of white sand, turquoise water and limestone cliffs, reached by a path through the rocks. It's tiny, it's popular, and it's absolutely worth it — if you know when to go.

Quick facts

  • Official name: Pantai Labuan Sait
  • Entrance fee: IDR 15,000 per adult, cash only (October 2026)
  • Parking: across the road, small fee for scooters and cars
  • Facilities: toilets and showers at the top of the stairs
  • Best time: early morning or late afternoon, ideally at low to mid tide

Getting there

The beach sits on Jalan Labuan Sait, the main road between Bingin and Uluwatu Temple. Park in the lot across the road, cross over and you'll see the ticket booth. With Grab or Gojek, search for "Padang Padang Beach" — drivers know it well.

The stairs: half the fun

After the ticket booth, around 120 steps lead down the cliff, and the last part squeezes between a huge rock and the cliff wall. The steps are steep and can be slippery, so wear sandals with grip and go slowly with a surfboard or a heavy bag.

When to go: tides and crowds

Padang Padang changes completely with the tide. At low tide there's more sand, the water in the lagoon is calmer and tide pools appear between the rocks. At high tide the beach shrinks to a narrow strip and the waves reach the rocks. Check a tide chart before you go.

The beach is only about 110 metres long, so it fills up fast. Arrive before 10 AM for space and soft light, or come in the late afternoon and stay for the sunset.

Things to do

  • Watch the surfers. The reef break here, Padang Padang Left, is nicknamed the "Balinese Pipeline" and it's for experienced surfers only. Even from the sand, watching a rider disappear into the barrel is a show.
  • Learn to surf. Next door, the gentler wave at Baby Padang is friendlier, and local surf schools give lessons there.
  • Swim. On calm days at low tide, the lagoon is good for a swim. Mind the sharp reef.
  • Explore the tide pools that appear at low tide.
  • Stay for the sunset over the Indian Ocean.

About the monkeys

Monkeys live on the cliffs around the stairs. They're fun to watch and very quick with anything shiny or edible. Keep sunglasses, phones and snacks in a closed bag, don't feed them, and don't try to take anything back if they grab it.

What to bring

Cash in small notes (entrance, parking, coconuts), reef-safe sunscreen, water, a towel, sandals with grip and a dry bag for your phone.

Fun facts

  • Padang Padang got its global fame in 2010, when Julia Roberts filmed scenes of Eat Pray Love here.
  • Every August, the wave hosts the Rip Curl Cup — Indonesia's longest-running international surf contest. In 2026, both winners were just 16 years old.

After the beach: where to eat

For a coconut and a quick bite, the small warungs by the beach do the job.

For a proper meal, walk one minute from the parking lot to Tarragon, the only Georgian restaurant in Uluwatu. Georgia is a small country in the Caucasus, between Europe and Asia, and its food is exactly what you want after a day in the waves: shashlik from the open-fire grill, khachapuri with melted cheese and khinkali full of hot broth. We open at 2 PM, so you can come straight from the sand for a late lunch, or after sunset for dinner. Scooters park right at the door.
