The best sunset spots in Uluwatu (and where to have dinner after)

Uluwatu faces west over the Indian Ocean, and that makes its sunsets some of the best in Bali. Tall limestone cliffs, surfers in the last waves, the sky going gold, then pink, then purple — it's the daily show everyone plans their day around. Here's where to watch it.

When is sunset in Uluwatu?

Sunset over the Indian Ocean seen from the cliffs of Uluwatu, Bali

Bali is close to the equator, so the sun sets at about the same time all year round — roughly between 6 and 6:30 PM.

Check the exact time for your day and arrive 30–45 minutes early: the golden hour before sunset is often the most beautiful part.

1. Uluwatu Temple

The classic. The temple stands on a cliff about 70 metres above the ocean, and the view along the coastline at sunset is unforgettable. Combine it with the Kecak fire dance, which starts at sunset in the open-air theatre next to the temple. Come early — this is the most popular sunset spot in the area. 2. Padang Padang beach

For a sunset with your feet in the sand. The small cove surrounded by cliffs turns golden in the evening, and surfers stay out until the last light. Check the tide: at high tide there's very little beach left. Our guide to Padang Padang

3. Bingin beach

A relaxed, surfy sunset. Simple warungs sit right on the sand, so you can watch with a cold coconut and the sound of the waves. Be ready for the stairs back up after dark — bring a phone light.

4. Suluban beach (Blue Point)

A beach hidden below the cliffs, below one of Uluwatu's most famous surf breaks — it's a dramatic place to watch the sun go down — just check the tide before you go down, and head back up before the water rises.

5. Melasti beach

On the southern coast of the Bukit, with white sand, turquoise water and tall cliffs along the road down to the beach. A good choice if you want more space on the sand.

Sunset tips

  • Check both the sunset time and the tide — on Uluwatu's beaches, the tide decides how much sand you'll have.
  • Bring cash: many beaches and warungs only take rupiah.
  • Pack a light or use your phone for the stairs back up after dark.
  • Keep sunglasses and phones close at the temple and on the cliffs — the monkeys are quick.

Fun fact

Bali's sunsets come fast. Close to the equator, the sun drops almost straight down, so the time between sunset and darkness is short — don't arrive "just in time".

After sunset: dinner

Once the sun is gone, most people have the same thought: where do we eat? Tarragon is a minute's walk from the Padang Padang parking lot and open until 11 PM, so it's an easy next stop after a sunset at Padang Padang, Bingin or the temple. Georgian food is made for this moment: shashlik from the open-fire grill, khachapuri with melted cheese and khinkali full of hot broth, shared at one big table.
